In most areas of the San Juan National Forest , you must stay on roads and trails that are designated as open to motorized travel. In many areas, you may not take your ATV behind a closed gate, or travel off the road or trail, unless the area is specifically designated for that use. Motorized vehicles are not allowed in any Wilderness Areas. Always navigate with a U.S. National Forest Service Map and USGS Topo Maps when possible. Read more about ATV trails and regulations or view the San Juan National Forest Motorized Vehicle Use Map for additional information.

In Colorado, all ATV's must be registered, either with the State of Colorado or with your home state. Additionally, out-of-state residents who bring OHVs into Colorado must purchase a Colorado Non-Resident OHV permit which is valid from the date of purchase through the following March 31. For additional information on how to register an ATV, visit the Colorado State Parks website.
